A fellow printer I worked with in the Typographical Union, both now long gone, had the ability to use parody to counter the newspaper employers during negotiatons for a new contract. In addition he won over the majority of printers in his plant to become chapel chairman (shop steward) despite red-baiting.
After retirement we would meet from time to time for lunch to discuss "Life," sports, politics, the sad state of the union due to technological advances, etc. At one of the lunches he talked about his past political life in the Communist Party. After the revelations of Stalin's horrible deeds he left the Party, but maintained that the theory of socialism had more to offer than capitalism for working people. He saw the problem as how to get a form of socialism bereft of dictatorship. He believed that free-market capitalism was not the answer for the average person.
From environmental problems; costly health care due to profit-seeking of insurance companies; wage inequity; costly access to higher education; to a host of other social ills, he felt could be corrected by a fair, humane socialist society. Despite feeling there was not any organization that addressed those problems adequately, he decided to join the Democratic Socialists of America. He wanted to be identified with a political group dedicated to bring about a better life for all people.
He remained true to his belief that human society can be developed without greed and the need for war.
