I received this inviation a long time ago and never followed through writing it. Given all of Barry's wonderful qualities I thought his most important inspiration for me was the laughter and fun we shared. Knowing tht he was going through difficult times himself, I admired the seemingly ease of it and that he did not give in to a temptation I am sure must have been there to focus on the hard and difficult thingd in life.
But now, things have changed and I admire Barry's spirit even more.
He has been an ever quick witted friend full of life, fun and laughter, something that attracted Michael to Barry in the first place and something that will always be a source of inspiraion for me.
But through the years, Barry has also been a very generous and caring friend to me and my husband Michael who passed away two months ago. Although I think Michael and I were sometimes quite a pair to deal with, Barry has been there for us with advice and practical support when we needed it, no questions asked.
I remember sitting in a little office next door to Barry's and hearing Michael's and Barry's intermingled laughter and knowing that two persons were enjoying each other's company, I did not think then that the memory of this could make me smile in the midst of sadness as it does now.
It was Barry, who'd not complain but rather enjoy it when the three of us went out together for a Mexican meal after Michael recovered from a severe illness last year and Michael was so happy to be up and about --- and in a Mexican restaurant to boot --- that he conversed more with the waiter than with the two of us.
It was also Barry who, when I could hardly focus, together with his wonderful friend Marika helped me find and understand what I wanted to do for Michael's and Ann's, Michael's mother's, memorial service --- the two of them had been in a fatal accident together -- to make it something that could be personal and private and respond to both of their ideas of life.
And it was Barry who took the time and effort to help me meet friends of his who'd be able to help me cope with some of the very acute life chages I am going through.
Barry's birthday is coming up. He should know grateful I am for his friendship and how much he inspires me to be a better person myself and to help others the way he helped me -- and Michael.
He should also know that although we listened to each others music, Michael and I had differet tastes in music with a few exceptins: We both lov(ed) Barry's songs because they are as sincere and beautiful as he is as a friend.
